My best friends are Matt and Dan. We all started attending the same
church around 1983 and have more or less stuck together ever since.
After a short-lived collegiate career, Dan headed for high seas and
adventure as a Naval officer on a nuclear submarine. With his tour of
duty over, I convinced him that the University of Illinois couldn't be
beat, and he's now taking classes there and is also in Navy Reserve
Officer Training Corps (ROTC). Matt just moved to Arizona and got a
way-cool job assembling electronics for McDonnell-Douglas helicopters
(especially the new longbow Apache).
- Matt shows his love for camp food during
summer camp at Timber-lee, which is a church-associated retreat in
southern Wisconsin (yah, hey der!). Following this delightful
experience around 1985, we were smart enough to only go to winter
camp, which was far more entertaining and had marginally better food
(although I still hold the record for "most napkinfuls of grease oozed
out of a single slice of Timber-lee pizza")
- Matt and I tried to stay entertained during
an awful canoe trip to the Minnesota boundary waters. We lived off
of dehydrated food for ten days; it rained every day (and I mean
rained hard); and as if that weren't enough, two people were
killed by lightning a couple hundred yards away from us during one
of the storms
- Matt wanders into the nudie bar between
our hotel and the convention center at the Denver '88 youth
conference
- Matt tries to look cool during winter camp
at Timber-lee
- Me, Dan and Matt - the Three Amigos, or
Stooges, or something to that effect
- Dan and I seemed to be the only ones who
knew where the camera was located on the Shock Wave, which is (or was)
the world's tallest steel roller coaster at Six Flags Great America
north of Chicago. That's our friend Mark holding on for dear life in
front of us
- Matt and I try to look serious during a boat
trip on the Chicago River with the other graduating high school seniors
from our church (spring 1991)
